MC3
Welcome to my Construction Technology page. Below you will find a record of the projects that I worked on with pictures and brief explanations.
Wood Species
Hardwoods: Walnut, Maple, Cherry, Oak and Beech
The trees have broad leaves rather than needle-like leaves. They produce a fruit or nut, and often go dormant in the winter.

Softwood: Pine, Redwood and Douglas fir
Softwoods are conifers, trees with needle-like leaves that bear their seeds in cones.
The Safety Glass Box
The first project that we built was a box to hold our pencils and safety glasses. We used the table saw to cut the long grooves and the rabbet joints. We used the power miter box to cut the materials to length, the band saw to trim one end and the drill press to pilot holes and make the finger hole. I used small nails and glue to fasten all of the parts together. Below is a picture of the parts and the final project.

The Cutting Board
The third project of the first semester is the traditional cutting board. This project requires that strips of material be ripped to width and cut to length. The material is then clamped and glued together as seen in the pictures below. When dried, the excess glue is scraped off and the two faces are belt sanded. The board is then cleaned up in the Production sander and the ends trimmed to length. At this point juice groves can be cut, corners rounded, edges bull-nosed and the project sanded. The final step is to apply 2 coats of mineral oil to the board.

Cell Phone Holder
The fourth project of the semester in a cell phone holder. The project requires that material will have to be milled down on the Planer. All material needs to be milled to 1/2" thick. The material will be edge jointed and ripped to 3"wide. The material is then run through a series of dado cuts to create the joint. After the joints have been cut, the material will be sanded. The final step is to apply 2 coats of a Danish oil finish.
